That Diversity word, Pacific Circle, and tires

This morning, I found myself reading the article at DCist about the whiteness of the Post, Washingtonian, City Paper and DCist. I've considered writing for DCist because, frankly, their rock music coverage is so one-dimensional (all indie, all the time!), but I'm lazy. That would require meeting a deadline, apparantly. And besides, I don't at all represent the DC community, not having grown up here and only being half-minority. We'll just ignore that the non-minority "white" half is still not in the inner circle of whiteness that Ron Takaki talks about. That half is not WASPy white, it's Slavic-Jewish white. Which can lead to a whole other topic but it's Saturday morning and I'd rather have my coffee than think that hard right now.

So I was reading DCist and came across this article on the proposed renaming of DC streets after US territories. I think it's a silly idea, but fun. My home state has a street that I've never visited because it's on the far side of the city in an area we never go. But if I went down Guam Ave., which would be in a more convenient area, I'd be reminded a bit of home. Of course, I would also be reminded of that devastating brown tree snake. American Samoa would remind me of my cousin's husband, Sape, who just got the most amazing tattoo ever. It's so personal and so detailed and beautiful. You'll be able to see it on NFL TV in the next year, I think. (the NFL news crew is doing a special program on the Polynesian players' tattoos). However, before any of that renaming (or future stree naming) goes on, I think DC should get to rename a street after the district. K Street. Or 16th. Something central and big and walked all over.

I also wouldn't mind Dupont Circle reverting to Pacific Circle.

Speaking of streets, can I tell you how glad I am that we were out near the Acura dealership on Rt. 50 at 10:15 pm last night rather than in DC at the 45 Grave show? Because getting a flat in below freezing weather and having to change driver's side front tire just to get back in the car and realize that the other front tire was also flat was not a fun thing. Good thing the service center was really close and open until midnight.

Sweetie changing the flat tire on Rt. 50

Consequently, we now have a loaner car. And we still went to Tower Records after that.

(aside: the first of the vacation blog entries is up, with pictures!)
