Just an average Hawaiian day

There are things that might go unnoticed in everyday life when riding in a car. Taking a walk, however, will expose you to a lot of things. My parents' neighborhood (the same one I grew up in) is an exceptional place to walk. Not only is everything on a hill (sometimes a steep one), but where else on one walk would I be able to discover a balloon tree, a squished toad, half of a rat, and a giant peacock? All on one street? I forget, in this busy suburban city, that there are other sounds besides civilization. Sounds that I grew up with, like the bullfrogs in the creek and the (stupid) Hawaiian doves, finches, orioles, and raucous mynah birds. Smells I grew up with, like guava, puakenikeni, ginger and greenery (not to mention mildew and wet cement). Our neighborhood is so bland compared to theirs. We don't have live peacocks strutting around, pooping on the pool decks and calling across the valley. We don't have wild chickens running on the roads. Luckily, we also don't have the 50+ inches of rain in two weeks (the visit started out nice enough). Although the waterfalls in the Ko`olaus are one of my favorite things after a rainstorm.

Centipedes certainly aren't a favorite. Genki sushi is. Tako poke is not. And seeing the 20-story (so dad says) distant early warning radar at Pearl Harbor was interesting. Very much like the one we saw in Barrow (that photo was taken by a man on the same tour as us).

We timed our vacation perfectly to coincide with the Olympics, apparantly. We flew there during opening ceremonies and back during closing. Happily, I got to watch as much curling, snowboarding, ariel skiing and ice dancing to keep me satisfied until the next Olympics. I guess I use up all my sports interest in those two weeks, 'cause I have no interest at any other time.

More later. There's our whole side trip to Maui, after all.

For now, I think I'd like to be sitting under the kitty tree in the backyard...

I took my camera with me to Anna Miller's and then forgot to take a picture of you two!
