Crafty Bastards Review

I just got back from a lovely day. The weather was perfect - early Fall, still warm with that crisp feel and blue skies. A bit high on the ragweed but I took my medicine, so I didn't suffer. I walked around Dupont and Adams Morgan and felt nostalgic for 1990-1991 (when I lived in the area). The church of Scientology was still going strong, trying to recruit folks.

Ironically, the first booth I went to turned out to be Cynthia's, but she wasn't there, she was shopping around! So I walked through the tables, purchasing a bit here and there, wishing I had enough cash to buy something from Lindsay Bishop (I wrote about her last December). I looked, I looked some more, I had a piece of the Sassy poundcake from Cake Love (I told sweetie that I want a cake from Cake Love for my birthday, so I was happy they were there so that I could sample their wares. The sassy pound cake was wonderful!). I bought sweetie a chocolate chip cookie as well but it started to melt, so I ate it. Sorry, sweetie (but it was sooooo good!).

I met up with Cynthia, finally, and really had a good time checking out her friend, Katie's, stuff (I'd seen Cynthia's stuff in the flesh and online already and know what a damned good sewer/knitter/crafter she is). Katie has a sense of color that matches my tastes. While the wares weren't exactly up my alley, I really appreciated the colors although I had a strange reaction to seeing kukui nuts being sold as jewelry. It's so old Hawaii, I can't quite get used to seeing it as trendy.

So I ended up buying a cute and snuggly pink scarf with green polkadots from Katie, a pirate girl coin purse and pirate girl riding a vampire bunny patch from Damned Dollies and some ornaments from Pixie Fashions (seen her in the Washington Post but never saw her stuff "in the flesh" until today).

The others I liked: ilikeseamonsters.com (I like her t-shirts, so cute!) and Supernova Design (no images of her really great skull stuff).

The good:

So much stuff going on! It was really inspiring to see what others are doing. I got a ton of ideas or refreshed old ideas, really. There was very little there that I don't have the ability to do, I'm just so lazy.

The bad:

There wasn't a ton of stuff that was really up my alley. I love Cynthia's messenger bags and will definitely purchase one, only I think I have more of a custom style in mind. What was with all the baby stuff? It seemed so strange, although I suppose that many, many hip mothers are making their own stuff (since it's impossible to find hip stuff for kids in stores) while they're on maternity leave or something. The demographic must skew heavily to work-at-home moms that have style. It's really amazing on the one hand but although all that baby stuff is cute, I don't have a need for it. The majority of the jewelry is just not my style. I don't know what my style is in jewelry, though, so I can't explain why it's not. Well, except for Bishop. I like cleaner lines, I think. But then I like gothy and art nouveau stuff, too. Perhaps the jewelry was more cute than I like. At any rate, I was a bit disappointed.

But my biggest problem with the show was this: nothing for fat people. Where's the love for fat women? Why are all the t-shirts so damn small? Why are the necklaces so small? If there's a niche calling out there, it's certainly that one. There were tons of stuff for hip mommas, but there needs to be stuff for hip fat women, too. It's, sadly, something that peeves me a lot, when it comes to adorable stuff. I saw the most adorable skirts and hoodies and such (glitter skulls!), but nothing larger than an XL.

Which is another reason I have to get sinnerstyle.com up and running. There's cute stuff I want to wear and since I can't buy it, I guess I have to make it. I'm betting that others feel the same way, though, so we'll see if I can sell anything.

Anyway, despite being a bit disappointed about that, I had a fabulous day at the fair, followed by fun purchase of beading supplies at Beadazzled, a cute purchase from Proper Topper, and the tandoori chicken sandwich at Cosi. Yummy day all around.

Comments

I was laughing at the Scientologists in Dupont as well.

"Sorry honey, I'm a local. I know what you are fronting for."

I liked Crafty Bastards but didn't buy much either. I was fascinated watching the hip hop dance competition. Those boys could do amazing things with their bodies.

I tried to take a pic of the Scientology building but my phone camera didn't do justice. I missed the hip-hop competition completely, though. I didn't realize it was going on until I got home and read the Crafty Bastards guide.
