Happy things

I love Snow. It's my favorite screen buddy this time of year (not that I have a screen buddy the rest of the year). There's also Snow for Mac OS X and 9. I can't get the Mac version to run at home, though, since I never upgraded from 10.1.5 to 10.2 much less 10.3, so I can't say how it works on that OS. It doesn't seem to affect my XP performance at work and I love how the snow piles up on top of open windows and blows around in the wind. Sooooo.....

Where was I?

Oh.

We ate at Temel last Friday. I'll have some thoughts on that later and dining in the Fairfax City, Centreville, & Chantilly area. I've long thought this little area needed a really good comprehensive guide (if only for our own pleasure) because chowhound, egullet and food-plan.org cover the whole metro area. Plus, chowhound's board is annoying to use.

So I'm thinking of attempting my own guide since neither Tyler Cowen's Ethnic Dining Guide nor Jesus' endorsement of Northern Virginia's restaurants works for me. This is not to say that you shouldn't give Tyler's incredibly long page a look-see. It could use a better design but is not difficult to read and it's the best guide to ethnic dining in our whole area.*

Getting away from this area and into another that is near and dear to my heart, I love to peruse the Hawaii forum on egullet. One recent thread has an incredibly yummy review of bentos, plate lunches, and okazuya. The pictures are so appetizing, I can almost smell the shoyu and mac salad! I can hear the sound of rubber bands rolling over and snapping plastic now.

As I say all the time, if only I had some capital, I would open a local-style eatery here, complete with conveyer-belt sushi ala Genki. I'd have to serve plate lunches occasionally, too. And chantilly, guava and lilikoi chiffon cakes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

another happy thing: I finally got an iPod case that I love. It's made by Lodis and has a lime green exterior and turquoise interior. Tres chic.

Meanwhile, we had our work holiday breakfast today, and for the first time ever, I won something at the raffle. Not only that, but it was something kinda cool - a bottle of Kiehl's Original Musk eau de toilette (which will end up on eBay because I don't like the scent). I was happy at first. But then...the next raffle gift was the rest of the Kiehl's gift bag (Kiehl's had a huge event here and apparantly everyone who went got these amazing gift bags of which some were donated for the raffle and then split up into two parts - I got one part), which consisted of 10 of their full-size creams, lotions, cleansers, shampoos, etc. How jealous am I that I only got the eau de toilette? Quite.

* Interesting aside: Tyler once dated my friend for awhile but then told her he couldn't see her anymore because he'd started dating someone else and would rather pursue something with her instead. What a nice way to put it, yes? /sarcasm. I assume that this person is now his wife. I don't mean to imply that I think he was mean or anything. Perhaps just not one to mince words.

Always a pleasure to spread the snow! Such happiness is so simple but warms the cockles of the heart. Sometimes I open snow during the summer but somehow it feels better when it's a foggy day outside like today...and if you squint just right, it might look like snow. Or maybe that's just me.

L&L hasn't expanded to NoVa yet? Give 'em time, give 'em time.
