For the first time in my life, I watched a presidential debate all the way through. Truth be told, I don't think I'd ever even tuned in to one before. I certainly haven't spent more than 5 minutes watching State of the Union Addresses, either.
But I was a bit curious as to how the Bush-Kerry debate would go. I admit that I am biased. I don't like Bush - I disagree with almost everything he does - but I also am not all about Kerry. I've never actually been fond of anyone running for president. Er, or any political office, actually. I just don't like politicians and the whole fake-happiness & insincerity of it all, like people you don't know wishing you happy birthday. I mean, they don't know you so although they might be well-intentioned, their wishes don't really feel sincere...sorry, I digress.
So I didn't think I'd last the whole debate.
There were some names and statistics thrown out that meant nothing to me. I am interested in finding out whose facts were closest (as far as money & numbers goes, anything can be made to fit one's goals) but I can't remember the website name (checkthefacts?) that I can go to to find out. So, without a political bone in my body, here are my admittedly biased observations.
Kerry: I suspect that my image of him was severely impaired by media portrayal. According to the press, he's wimpy and elitist. I saw none of that last night. Honestly, I expected him to be less direct. Nope. He impressed me. I have questions about his idealistic goals but he was much more confident and convincing than I'd thought he could be. He was on his game.
Bush*: What was up with that? I was expecting him to have some snappy comebacks, be witty, be funny, be something other than, well, tired and almost annoyingly repetitive. Either the election/war is really wearing him down or he stayed up too late the night before. He was clearly not on his game, and for that, I'm pretty disappointed. I expected a more spirited debate but he looked tired and annoyed. In fact, near the end, he visibly spaced out.
Overall, a pretty good start to the debates but I hope Bush sleeps a bit before the next one - I'd like it to be an even debate. Of course, I harbor great distrust of all politicians, so I can't help but wonder just how it really matters what they say. Those who don't watch/read will go with media portrayal and we all know how inaccurate that is. For me, the presidential candidates can talk about their idealism, religion, determination, plans, etc. all they want and it still won't matter. The world always changes and politicians always go back on their words.
Read my lips.
*Completely unrelated, but why is it that I can never look at shots of him head-on without thinking Alfred E. Newman?
P.S. It's finally октябр!!!
( 02:29 EH | what is this world coming to? )FactCheck is the one you're thinking of. But read your local paper. The WaPo has a good section called "Debate Referee," along with a lot of other stories about the event.
Posted by: Linkmeister at 01.10.04 21:39I was surprised to hear Bush didn't do so well. I was sure he'd turn his "I am such a folksy average guy" shtick and make Kerry appear all stuffy and formal. Which is pretty much why I didn't watch - I also figured I'd heard and read the gist of each of their stump speeches and didn't expect to hear anything new. I am glad to hear that Kerry called Bush on the enemy=Saddam line. I'm so pissed that Ossama isn't mentioned, and that Afghanistan has faded into the background while everything focuses on Iraq.
I can't tell if I'm just getting older or if it's this administration and the events of the past four years but I find I'm only getting more and more cynical about politics and politicians as time passes...
Hmmm. I do feel like I'm not being a good voter/informed citizen by skipping the debates. But I'm also tired when I get home these days and besides reading the news sites I don't really want any facts blurting out of the tv at me. I'm too busy absorbing old CSI episodes that I'd missed...

Posted by: bunny at 04.10.04 11:52I have to say Kerry really impressed me too - on both debates. And this is also my first year to watch ANY debates. I haven't missed a one, and I've watched them all the way through - including the V.P. debate. History in the making for me!
