I know, I know I'm behind the trend here, but yesterday, I watched The White Stripes' new video for Seven Nation Army and I have been humming the bass line since. A bit T-Rex sounding, too, but who can resist that bass line? Sweetie said something about Jack trying to sound like Frank Black. That's not a bad thing, I think, to have T-Rex and The Pixies recalled just from one song. Soooooo, I highly recommend that you download the mp3 and embrace your addiction, too. Did I mention that they mention Wichita? (that last bit was to tempt the batgrrrrrl)
Meanwhile, the batster asked me what Toto song was used in Roger Sanchez's Another Chance (Afterlife Mix). The song is I Won't Hold You Back. Here's a good review of it.
Remember, Ibiza is pronounced "Eee - bee - tha," in case you were wondering, and I know you were.
So all this Toto stuff got me wondering what that band was up to now...
(confession time: did I ever mention that I was a beeeeeeeeg Toto fan in the late 70s? Yeah, I was a Total Toto Freak, deal with it). I haven't heard their music since 1983 or so but I knew they were still around. I also was saddened by the death of Jeff Porcaro. Yeah, I was. He was a really gifted musician. Actually, all of Toto are really gifted musicians. I guess that's the reason they are mainly studio musicians. Anyway, I digress. I used to love Toto, but Rosanna broke me. I hated that song. Still do.
However, I did buy Hydra on cd many years ago, just to hear the title track. I loved that album, yes I did. So science-fiction-fantasy-ish. Fed the imagination of an impressionable young girl who was, I believe, reading tons of books about dragons at that time.
Anyway, I sooooo digress.
Back to the matter at hand: Catching up with Toto. I discovered that there is a page at the official site which lists all songs that sample or cover Toto songs.
There's also a message board.
I found out that they've gone through many singers and that Steve Porcaro left the band in 1987. Steve was my favorite. I was so in love with his....keyboards. He was the coolest keyboard player my young eyes had ever seen (sorry, Nick Rhodes, at least you're one of the cutest). Steve had the best keyboards I ever saw. I even drew a picture for art class of him and his Moog synthesizer and some sort of keyboard with a computer circuit background. I worked in loving detail on that Moog drawing. Did I also mention that I was a freak and a geek in jr. high? heh.
In high school, I decided I wanted to be a soundboard tech and called a few places to see if I could take a course or work at a studio for free. All the men (yes, they were all men, no women) laughed at me. I had the audacity to be a girl (not only that, I was a *gasp!* 15-year-old girl) and therefore unable to understand the complexities. Bastards. I hear the industry is still really male dominated. Dammit, I want to break up that brotherhood. Maybe I'll visit the music store this weekend, although the last time - and batty will remember this as she was there - I went to one, the men (of course) wouldn't pay attention to us (three women), although we were the only customers in the store. And they just stood and laughed when we left the store. Batty will be glad to know that that store went out of business. Discrimination sucks.
Oops, somehow I got sidetracked.
Ok, finally, I have never been a big Steve Lukather fan, but I can officially say he's not uncool because he's wearing a Skurvy t-shirt!!! I want a Skurvy shirt. *pout* Ok, it's true, I am watching an auction on eBay for a Skurvy watch, which I have been drooling over for a year now, but the t-shirt is quite nice. Now, if I could only find something really cool with the Hot Cocoa Rapid Riders, I'd be ecstatic.
( 09:03 FH | aural pleasures. )"Batty will be glad to know that that store went out of business."
GOOD! Serves them right. They were overtly being assholes in that store. We didn't want to give them any money anyway. They deserve to be out of business! Weasels.
Ok ok, I now have to listen to that White Stripes song... Only for the T Rex bit - I fear the concept of Wichita references... And how handy - Jon has the cd.
"I decided I wanted to be a soundboard tech"
And you would have been a damn good one too. damn those sexist bastards.
Where can I get a Skurvy shirt?
See, we NEED to go shopping.
Now I must go listen to Africa and think about how "bless the rains in" still sounds like "mess the rains in" - which never did make sense, but I still can't make out the letter b.
